What Is Left
Each tablet is a ghost like, ethereal image of what is left of the foundations of Topaz. The embossed foot prints of the barracks, “apartments”, mess halls, and bath houses hold memories of those who were incarcerated and made the best in a harsh barren landscape. Institutional stainless steel shelves hold artifacts:
images of the evacuation in San Francisco, Gaman/shells, construction materials my grandfather managed, petrified face cloths worn during dust storms, and petrified Sears & Roebuck “dream” catalog.
These experiences are invisible but encoded in physical spaces and psychological landscapes, preserving and making history concrete.
